SIU School of Computing Announces New Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence+
CARBONDALE, Ill. — April 10, 2026
The School of Computing at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has announced a new incoming undergraduate major, the Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence+ (BSAIP), approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education and Faculty Senate. The program will be offered on campus within the School of Computing.
The Artificial Intelligence+ program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in artificial intelligence principles, algorithms, and programming while emphasizing the development, implementation, and evaluation of AI-driven solutions. Students will study areas such as machine learning, large language models, data-driven decision making, and the ethical and societal implications of artificial intelligence.
Building on SIU Carbondale’s established strengths in computing education and research, the AI+ curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, interdisciplinary applications, and real-world problem solving. Graduates of the program will be prepared for careers in AI-related fields as well as further graduate study in computing and related disciplines.
The Artificial Intelligence+ major reflects the School of Computing’s commitment to addressing emerging workforce and research needs while providing students with practical, ethically grounded AI education.
The new degree complements existing undergraduate and graduate offerings in Computer Science, Information Technology, and Cybersecurity Technology, further expanding the School of Computing’s academic portfolio.
“Artificial intelligence is transforming every sector, and this program prepares students to apply AI responsibly and effectively in real-world settings.”
— Dr. Chun-Hsi Huang
Director, School of Computing
Designed as an interdisciplinary program, the Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence+ integrates core computing foundations with applied artificial intelligence coursework and a required complementary minor. This structure enables students to develop deep technical AI skills while applying those techniques in a secondary domain such as computer science, business, science, engineering, or the arts—a distinguishing feature defined in the program’s approved curriculum.
“This innovative Artificial Intelligence AI+ program enables students to study artificial intelligence technologies and learn how to apply them to solve real-world problems in many domains by completing a minor in one of the application domains.”
— Dr. Xiaoqing Frank Liu
Dean, College of Engineering, Computing, Technology, and Mathematics
Following approval by the Illinois Board of Higher Education, additional information about the Artificial Intelligence+ major—including curriculum structure and advising guidance— will be provided through the School of Computing. Details regarding the initial enrollment term will be announced pending administrative approval.
